KELLIE - Photo Series Ep. 02

Welcome to the second episode of our Behind the Scenes Photography Series!

This Series will take you behind the scenes of our photoshoots where i’ll share camera settings, lighting plans, posing tips & tricks and MORE! Also, every episode will contain a stylised ‘Cinematic’ video uploaded every Wednesday to our YouTube Channel with the images uploaded to our Instagram!

LOCATION

This weeks location was on the corner or Karen Ave and Cronumma Ave in Broadbeach, Gold Coast. This location is quite popular amoungst Photographers due to the paintings on the white wall of The Borrowed Nursery and has a bit of an industrial vibe with car shops and sheds. It was fairly quiet around sunset which allowed us to film on the road with ony a few cars leaving the area.

CAMERA SETTINGS

We used a Canon EOS 5D Mk III Camera with a 85mm f/1.2 Lens at the beginning of the shoot and then used a 24-70mm Lens for the remaining of the shoot. I primarily shot at f/2.8 Aperture, ISO 100 and changed the shutter depending on the lighting which changed quite often as it was around sunset.

PORTRAIT 1

For most Portraits, I tend to shoot with a longer focal range as it compresses the foreground and background making for a much more appealing image. As i shot with my 24-70mm Lens for the most part of the shoot, i found myself shooting at 70mm more. If i was to use the Canon 70-200mm Lens, I would shoot around 135mm or 150mm to compress the foreground and background more!

As we were shooting just before Sunset, the light was rapidly changing by the minute so shooting with a lower aperture if f/2.8 allows more light to enter the lens and helps blur out the background.

Shooting at ISO-100 helps reduce the noise in the image, as well as bringing down the overall exposure of the image.

Another thing i like to do with my portraits is matching elements of the models outfit with the location. For this portrait, the yellow fabric in her hair

PORTRAIT 2

For this second image, the settings stay fairly the same. However, you’ll notice the shutter speed is higher at 1/250 compared to 1/125. This is to reduce the overall exposure of the image as the sun had come out just before I shot this image.

The lighting for this image is all natural! The sun was setting behind her and acted as a backlight which you can see around the edge of her black jacket, helping to seperate her from the background. Because we were quite close to the wall, the sun behind her was bouncing off the wall acting as a key light! You may notice that the lighting is quite orange, this is due to the warm yellow setting sun colour. I also changed the hue of the yellow + orange in lightroom during post-production to enhance those warm tones!
