KOBANE - Photo Series Ep. 01
Welcome to the first episode of our Behind the Scenes Photography Series!
This Series will take you behind the scenes of our photoshoots where i’ll share camera settings, lighting plans, posing tips & tricks and MORE! Also, every episode will contain a stylised ‘Cinematic’ video uploaded every Wednesday to our YouTube Channel with the images uploaded to our Instagram!
LOCATION
This weeks location was down Davison Lane, in Chinatown Southport, Gold Coast. This laneway has large scale colourful graffiti, stained bricks, spiral staircases, gates and bins and was perfect for the street look we were looking for! As a one way street, behind store fronts, it was fairly quiet with only a few cars coming down the lane so we bairly got interrupted.
CAMERA SETTINGS
We used a Canon EOS 5D Mk III Camera with a 24-70mm Lens for entire shoot. I primarily shot at f/2.8 Aperture, 1/500 Shutter with ISO 100. However, as the clouds moved exposing the sun frquently that day, i changed my shutter to 1/320 or 1/800 to suit, increasing or decreasing the exposure to my liking using the Histogram on the Camera.
PORTRAIT 1
For this portrait, I shot at a 70mm focal length as longer focal range compresses the foreground and background making for a much more appealing image, especially for portraits as it doesn’t distort the face like a 24mm wide angle up close would.
Choosing an aputure of f/2.8 allows more light to enter the lens and blurs out the background, focusing your attention to the subject, not the background.
Shooting at ISO-100 helps reduce the noise in the image, as well as bringing down the overall exposure of the image.
Lastly i chose a Shutter of 1/250 based off the histogram reading from the camera, exposing for the highlights as it was a pretty bright reflection off the yellow building and didn’t want to lose any detail in the highlights
PORTRAIT 2
For this portrait, i shot with a wider focal length of 33mm. As you can see, it distorts the edges a little. As we’re further away from the subject, we’re not seeing too much distortion on his face. For this shot, i also got lower to the ground and shot up as i wanted to get some of the windows above the artwork in to give more of that street/ industrial vibe.
Again, i used an aperture of f/2.8 allowing more light into the lens, but also to help focus your eye onto the subject. Because we’re not up close to the subject, the shallow depth of field doesn’t completely blur out the background, allowing us to view the artwork behind on the wall.
For the entire shoot, I shot at ISO-100to reduce the noise in the image, as well as bring down the overall exposure of the image.
For this shot, i chose a Shutter of 1/500 based off the histogram reading from the camera as the white in the background and the subjects shirt increased my overall exposure - clipping the highlights, so knowing that i didn’t want to change my other settings, i brought down the shutter, which also helps to freeze any motion and improves sharpness.
